Overview:
The Portugal Golden Visa is a residency-by-investment program launched in 2012, allowing non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens to obtain a residence permit in Portugal in exchange for a qualifying investment. It grants visa-free access to the Schengen Area and a pathway to permanent residency and citizenship.
Residency Duration:
- Initial residency: 2 years
- Renewable every 3 years thereafter
- Eligible for permanent residency or citizenship after 5 years
Price (Minimum Investment Options):
As of 2024, real estate investment options have been discontinued. Only the following are valid:
- €500,000: Investment in private equity or venture capital funds registered in Portugal
- €500,000: Company incorporation with 5+ jobs
Processing Time:
- Typically 6 to 12 months from application submission
- Delays possible due to demand and bureaucracy

- Minimum required stay (7 days in year 1, 14 days in years 2–5)
- Funds must come from outside Portugal
- Choose Investment Type and make the qualifying investment
- Obtain NIF (Portuguese tax number) and open a Portuguese bank account
- Prepare documentation and submit online application
- Schedule biometrics appointment with SEF (Immigration Office)
- Receive residence permit (2-year validity)
- Renew residency every 3 years
- Apply for citizenship after 5 years (with A2 Portuguese language level)
